It was 4th of July week in 2018, and the weather was just what I had been waiting for. I had made a previous attempt to fly off the bluff at Palisades Park, near Oneonta, Alabama but the wind was far too strong for safety. Today, though, was perfect.
The valley below Palisades park is home to the Heritage Golf Club, surrounded by country club styled homes with pools and other amenities. The golf course provides a bit of interest, but the real star of this flight is the view. The rolling hills of Alabama lay out in the distance, wrapped in a pale blue summer haze.
As an added surprise I encountered some turkey buzzards taking a break on a communications tower and a fire tower on the ridge overlooking the valley. Actually, I was lost and looking for my takeoff point, which was somewhere under the trees along the ridge, when I ran across the fire tower. I had heard it was somewhere along the ridge but it can’t be seen from the road so I’ve never found it before, and it was a pleasant bonus to find it and those big birds.
